Frequently Asked Questions

When buying your hot tub, look at some of these questions and answers to help guide you.

How do I start?

Do your homework; There are many sales people out there who want to sell their product. Listen carefully to the reasons they give for buying their product. Shop around before making a final purchase. The Hot Tub business is a rapidly growing market, previously set aside for the rich. The product has become more affordable due to a growing number of manufacturers. These manufacturers are governed by the same bodies, rules and regulations.

How much should my Hot Tub / Spa cost?

Depending on what spa/hot tub you are looking for. Inflatable Hot tub models can be as little as £1,000, whereas a Swim spa can be as much as £30,000. There is of course a large range of hot tubs/ spas in between this. Northern Hot Tubs offers luxury at affordable prices. Our Hot Tubs / spas are quality built to a high specification whilst we provide a family friendly service and maintenance contract, all at a realistic price.

What am I looking for in a hot tub / spa?

Quality!!! Quality!!! Quality!!!!

How often does the spa need to be drained?

This depends on how often you use it, but a general rule of thumb is every 3 to 4 months. It also depends if your water becomes contaminated with additional detergents or cosmetics. Good housekeeping can lengthen your water life.

Can my hot tub be used all year round?

Absolutely! Northern Hot Tubs are deep enough to ensure that the shoulders are submerged in the hot water at all times - very important for those clear but cold winter nights.

What electrical supply is required?

You will need a 32 Amp RCD protected supply. This must be fitted by a qualified electrician.

How do I fill and drain the Hot Tub?

Very simple, just use a garden hose pipe to fill and empty your hot tub. You may require to top up now and again too.

Location and access for Hot Tub

Make sure you have thought about how you are going to get your hot tub to where you want it. Where there’s a will there’s a way, however if a crane is required this will cost you extra.

What maintenance is required and how long does it take?

About 20 minutes a week to check water condition and add chemicals as required. Half an hour a month to clean the filter, 2 hours every 3 months to empty and refill the pool.

How long does the filter last?

This is dependent on usage of the hot tub and the degree of maintenance to the filter. (6-12 months)

Can I lie down in the hot tub?

Yes, several of our hot tubs have a full length ergonomically designed hydrotherapy body lounger to ensure perfect posture. Very relaxing!!!

If I am using the hot tub at night can it be lit up?

All Northern Hot Tubs come complete with underwater illumination. Some models can also be fitted with waterline LED lighting.

In the Summer can the heater be turned off so that the hot tub can be used as a "splash pool"?

Yes our hot tubs can be used as a splash pool to cool down in the summer and all have digital thermostats so you can set the precise temperature you want the hot tub at.

Do I need to treat the water with chemicals?

All spas need some form of chemical treatment for sanitising and balancing the ph of the water. The ozone system fitted to all of our spas reduces the need for chemicals substantially but water still needs to be tested and treated on a regular basis.

Is the water chemistry easy to look after?

Yes, you just dip the test strip into your water for a few seconds and read the results by comparing the test strip to the scale provided.

Where do I get the Chemicals?

Northern Hot Tubs can supply all the chemicals you need for operating your spa.

A checklist of what you should be looking for:

Shell

Skirt – Wooden or synthetic skirts, well that really is down to your taste. Plastic/synthetic skirts have come a long way recently, they are easier maintained, especially in our climate. However wooden skirts do bring an added sophistication but do require regular maintenance to keep up appearances.

Frame - hot tub framework can come in three forms: timber, steel and stainless steel. All of the Northern Hot Tub range comes with stainless steel frames, totally enclosed by using fibreglass reinforced plastic floor/base.

Insulation – In our climate this is very important. Good insulation can dramatically affect your running costs. All Northern Hot Tubs comes with full foam insulation to the shell and additional insulation in the skirt panels and floor. This keeps the cost of running a hot tub to a minimum by stopping heat energy escaping.

Number of water Jets and air jets – This depends on how many seats you have in your hot tub. The greater number of jets the better the hydrotherapy. To ensure your greatest pleasure and therapy, you should require at least 25 jets in your tub.

Filtration system – Look at the accessibility of the filter, can it be easily cleaned.

Pump – Your pump needs to be powerful enough for the size of your hot tub. The water jets will only be effective if your pump is powerful enough and the pipes are large enough to allow the water to flow with force. Check the rating and Kw of the pump. The higher the rating the higher the power.
